Did Paul not step away due to injury?

Dublin Senior Hurling 2024

How old would Eoin Conroy off maurs be at this point seen him play a handful of times in the last probably 2 years and he's absolutely scintillating I know it's not intercounty level and he's had big enough injuries in his career but a big man like him in around the square could cause danger even just last 20 minutes to throw on would make a fullback Line think for sure.
I don’t know the background to why he isn’t involved, but it possibly points to a wider issue. Conroy was a 2 year (maybe 3 year) minor. He was a 3 year U21 who was part of the team that took Galway to extra time in an All Ireland semifinal. For a player like that not to come through is a major issue. And he isn’t alone in having a serious underage pedigree and playing very little senior.
It might (and I am not sure it would) happen in counties with a huge selection available. But it shouldn’t happen in Dublin.
Guys that are that good (and Conroy was superb, I saw him play Waterford nearly on his own in a minor QF once) should never really go missing in the system.
I suspect the Cunningham regime was the cause of some of it, but there must be some systemic issue also. With our loss to football we need to be better than everyone else at retaining the best of the rest, but we are far off that level.
To (badly) paraphrase Oscar Wilde, to lose one class hurler is unfortunate, to lose the amount we do, is carelessness
-
Pretty sure he had a serious hip injury and was told inter county was off the menu, or at least someone said that on here. We’ve had poxy luck with injuries to key guys over the years.
-
It's a shame some of the lads that never progressed on to senior like they were looking they would. Happens everywhere for sure but just more in bloody Dublin.
The GAA just doesn't have the same hold on lads up here. I think that's the major thing. It's a lot easier for lads to take it or leave it in Dublin.
For a lot in Dublin once you leave the gates of your GAA club that's the end you're involvement with hurling or football until the next training or match. There's just so much more going on and different types of people that it's hard to have it like the religion it is in other parts of the country. There could be a Dublin hurler living on a street and not one of their neighbours would know or have any interest. Could even be the same at home I'm sure for some.
I don't think that kinda thing will ever be changed. But something that will help is not having lads involved too young. A lot of our bright prospects that played up as minors, either burnt out or had awful runs with injury.
-
Eoghan Conroy is lucky after serious injuries to be able to play club even. as it looked like total retirement for him at one stage.
So don't think systems or managers can be blamed on this one
-
He’s was the Wes Holohan of dublin hurling last year.

Conroy had injury problems and simply didn’t have the gas for that level after the recuperation
However playing for Maurs didn’t help him . That’s the bottom line too. Nobody from the senior management is looking outside division 2. -
He sure did and was brilliant that day. As I said, I like him. I like Dunphy as well but MD doesn't seem to fancy them. I'm not sure he was minding him. If he saw him as being good enough he would have started him. We're not blessed with an abundant of talent!
If MD doesn’t fancy Dunphy then we are going absolutely nowhere . Couldn’t understand that one last year

I'm not sure Dunphy was every 100% for a prolonged period last year, didnt hardly appear for brigids either

Dunphys reputation has seemed to get better the more he doesn't play. No doubting he's a good player but I think I'd trust MD decision making.....for now anyways.

... he put Paddy Doyle on Eoin Kelly ... just sayin ... even all Ireland-winning managers can make some bad calls.

Paddy was more let down by his team mates that day. No defender in the country would have kept tabs on Kelly the way that game was.

You don’t put a rookie on Kelly.

You don’t put a rookie on Kelly.
Exactly . MD got a pass mark last year nothing more unfortunately
If Mattie had done the same he’d have been run out of dodge
-
You don’t put a rookie on Kelly.
Too much made of this one I think and a bit of an insult to Paddy really. There wasn't a player on the squad that would have done any better that day.
Sure Mikey Butler was in his first season and had Kelly in his pocket in 22 semi final.
