Watched a good bit of Shane Mc Gowans send off, a good send off in general, maybe a few things said towards the end that would have been better kept indoors, not a religious type, but in fairness the priest did a great job.
Seems to me that these funerals are getting an awful lot of coverage on the main TV stations which I find a bit over the top .Fair enough to have a report on the news but live coverage on a station seems a lot. Can't even imagine the coverage the likes of Bono will get .

Might have been wrong about live coverage just was a bit surprised to see both BBC and Sky having what seemed like lengthy parts of it.Would expect it to be streamed but not that much a part from a report on the news

It was very over the top. Not sure how it was merited at all. Maybe it’s just the 24 hour news cycle.

When it went back to the presenter at some stage he mentioned that they had just finished singing "The Parting Glance".
I switched on BBC news and it was showing what was part of it same as Sky , there was no commentary just showing it as it was going on at the time .It was on later so was a highlight part rather than a live feed .

Don't want to go all Dave Fanning on this but while he had a good career it was hardly the stuff of legends.We have seen when someone dies they are elevated way above and beyond what they actually achieved. I liked some of his stuff but my favs I could count on one hand .

I listened to two pogue albums the other day, Rum sodomy and the lash and if I should fall from the grace of God, what struck me was how well known pretty much every track was, not many artists achieve that, also a lot of the covers he did are almost better known than the originals

As always it’s a case of each to their own.
For me he was a phenomenal writer. I borrowed Rainy Night in Soho for my wedding song. A lot of people really connected with his stuff, particularly the Irish in London in the 80s. You’ve Bruce Springsteen saying he was one of his favourite writers and people will be listening to him in 100 years time. People like Nick Cave etc saying similar, you would imagine these people know what it takes to be a great song writer. Then you have others, such as Fanning, saying he wasn’t all that and stops short of saying he’s overrated. Who knows anyway, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.
To me he is up there with the great Irish writers of the 20th century, to others he was alright, had a few decent tunes. Many will tell you he was a repulsive drunk and drug addict who couldn’t sing for shite.
Art is always subjective.
