Agreed. Up to a point. The push towards private health insurance defo does. Is there much private HI used in Continental Europe? I suppose the difference anyway in Ireland is they've created the conditions whereby PHI is a virtual essential necessity. And lots of Irish people head over to other countries to get stuff done.

We can create a good public system if we want to.

But the decisions that need to be taken to achieve that are politically unpalatable as they involve voluntary redundancies and job losses

Senior civil servants would have to be moved on also or given early retirement

Exactly. Issue is we are paying a lot of of tax for a poor public service and have to go private to get seen

I would class us high because we don’t get value for our tax dollars . No bang for our buck

Mixed but heavily weighted towards a public system. In effect, they have universal health care with equity of access and this is funded through centralised tax. Some want or can afford even better health services and have private health access at their own discretion.

We are also subject to centralised tax (prsi and usc) to fund our system but are charged for primaty care and don't have equity of access. Hence, high levels of private insurance and very long waiting lists in the public system.

that's where things inevitably get to when the compo-culture/claims-avoidance dynamic takes over everything. obsession with procedures and checklists instead of common sense and initiative.

the insurance industry, lawyers, politicians and the judiciary are all culpable.

picking up a distressed child is an assault. giving a pensioner an unwanted bike is a breach of procedure or larceny. cleaning the floor of your shop is an attack on the public's right to an event-free life. the right to refuse admission is racism/discrimination. and so on.

it doesn't have to be if the judiciary do their job and interpret statute law for it's intended purpose.
