For me, it’s the institutions of the British Army, the RUC and the British Government which should be held most accountable. The British soldier was 18 at the time. It was the height of the troubles. He has rightly been brought to justice but I am not going to try to imagine what was going through his mind in the moments before he fired. But I would hold the the government bodies I have mentioned far more accountable them him.

I think you have to create an atmosphere of accountability without liability to get to the bottom of what happened during those years.

Having said that, I don’t think the British will ever admit to what they did.
