To use a Mick McCarthyism, I’d have taken your hand off for this situation in Feb.
Nicky Brennan saying this morning that Donal was heavily bandaged up and not moving well at all, hopefully he recovers for the weekend to be back to himself.
Seems things went better vs Carlow when we went more direct, how would that fare vs Clare?
Where is it on? If we can put it up to Galway we can put it up to Clare. Clare are good and playing well and seem to be able to up it against Limerick in a way no other team can. A bit like Wexford do against Kilkenny…they are far better than Wexford…I know. I do think Clare are capable of poor performances though. They fell apart last year…with pretty much the same group of players They have Tony Kelly and I dunno how to deal with him but I do think they have a few areas/players that can be targeted. They are playing us too, so they may take us for granted in the same way we take perceived weaker teams for granted at times. I dont think we will win but I think we can give them a game if we get a lot of things right
A team like us have to man mark Tony Kelly. If he is put under extreme pressure he can lose
It a bit as he is greedy and doesn’t pass the ball too often.
We have to try something different. If Conor Cleary is not playing, I’d name Danny at 12, start him at 14 and pull everyone else out, for the first few mins. Try a few high balls in. Then take him out and do a two-man full forward line. It is essential that we pull the half-forwards out, make midfield a war zone and leave space inside, like Linerick did. Clare have serious pace from 8 to 15 but usually have a few who do not fire on a given day. We must get our match-ups right. I would defo man-mark Tony Kelly and Shane O’Donnell. Clare have a better bench and will be hot favourites. Imho it would take divine intervention for us to beat them but we have nothing to lose. There is serious pressure on Brian Lohan after leaving Cian Nolan on, the last day nevermind starting a rookie keeper against Tipp!
Agree yeah, they do seem to be able to push Limerick but agree that they’re not 1-15 as intimidating as Limerick would be, a few guys in there that are good but nothing special IMO. I’m hoping we can give them a game and at least make them bloody work for it.
I see Eddie Brennan, who obviously likes & rates Dublin hurling as much as ever, wrote in this morning’s Independent that the close nature of the Dub v KK & Galway games was a result of us ‘bringing them down to our level’! Eddie must have got a clatter from some big, dirty Dub hurler that he hasn’t forgotten about, or maybe it was his time with the lemons that has left him so bitter!
■■■■ it, if we want to lay down a potential marker (I live in eternal hurling wristy hope) then do it in Limerick. Be close to a full house id say given the other game aswell.
