That Barney Rock scored that injury time equalizing goal against Cork in the All-Ireland Semi Final. Hugs of sympathy to any fellow ressers who were also there that day and feel as old reading that as I do writing it!
Misé !
Can still remember the madness of the goal & the 2 older brothers grabbing on to my jacket collar to make sure I didn’t get crushed.
Guilty as charged
But what a feeling when it hit the net & little did we know we were about on a historical weekend by the banks of the Lee
For those lucky enough to be too young to remember or for us senile aul shites needing all the memory aids we can get, here it is in all its glory.
I didn’t get to enjoy it as much as I should have in the moment. While I was 9 at the time, I could follow games pretty well as regards scoring etc but after us being 7 points down with 11 minutes to play, in all the excitement of our comeback I lost track of the score and thought we were 4 down. So I thought we still needed another point and thought the rest of the Dubs in the ground were overcelebrating, like the way some fans do when we’re awarded a penalty. It was only when the final whistle blew I realised we’d drawn the game.
I saw fcuk all. I only saw a sea of legs & bodies in front of me going ape shit. But my finely honed powers of deduction told me something good had happened.
Remember it well but probably more for the madness that followed a week later in Cork … Cork rightfully got the replay down by the Lee … sun was splitting the stones … Hill 17 camped at one end and we gave them a right spanking … all those shouting for Dubs outta croker… be careful what ya wish for
The trip home was immense and passing thru Tipp the locals out in various towns cheering the Dubs cavalcade back home
One of me top memories
John Allen, who among other things, went on to manage Cork hurlers to All-Ireland successes, was immense at full forward in the drawn game. It was probably one of Gerry Hargan’s toughest days in the Blue of Dublin but he bounced back a week later and again in the final as one of the 12 Apostles.
Eamon Coughlan’s 5000m World Championship victory of the same year was recalled on here this day, last week (Athletics thread??). His victory was on the same day as Galway’s semi-final win over Donegal.
Ah stop !
Still bitter the Mammy deemed me too young to go.
Great to see that video , now if that doesn’t put a smile on your face nothing would , just talking to someone recently and I mentioned how good Conroy could be lovely footballer
Forgotten how good the skills were that day , some exhibition of kick passing and scoring
Gotta wonder sometimes if we have just over complicated the whole thing
Mullins outstanding and remember that was after his crash and u will never play again diagnoses
Was in the isle of man got the result on the wireless.
What a pass from ray hazely - outside of his boot - to rock .
Tommy was effortlessly brilliant
Great day it was, the hill was electric and then the replay. pure magic
Suffered same for each of our goals a week later in the Páirc while standing on my seat. Privileged to be there. Watched the draw on the telly with my grandparents, think they found me a small bit loud that day.
Did exact same the previous year. Thought Offaly goal only tied the game!
Great goal , mayhem on the hill. Great old game too.
Tommy was very stylish and elegant. My memory ( and I could be wrong) was he used to get a bit of stick for being a bit of a lightweight in the physical stakes( from the crowd on the hill). But he was a lovely footballer .
