I’m a Tipp native and have hurled at all club grades up to age 45 when achilles tendon rupture put paid to my career.
I mixed refereeing and playing up to time of my injury. I continued as ref up to about 60 and the arrival of my first grandchild. I got pissed off with togging out and teams not notifying that match had been called off, 2 refs being assigned to same match, having to ring around to find qualified refs to assist at championship matches as required here in Dublin.
I saw myself not as a career ref but as someone to help hurlers enjoy their pastime and keep them safe. I had played too many games where there was no ref only a partisan member of one of the participating teams.
I now support my grandchildren at club and school games.
I am very critical of the standard of refs in the modern game.
I hope to contribute to something to your forum.
